ABB PQF4-3 TAS.580 Arc Protection Relay / Arc‑Flash Protection Unit

PQF4‑3 TAS.580 is a fast arc‑flash protection relay for medium‑voltage and low‑voltage switchgear cabinets. It detects light radiation generated by internal arc faults together with over‑current criteria, triggers rapid circuit‑breaker tripping to minimize arc‑flash damage to switchgear and personal injury. Supports multiple optical arc‑sensor inputs, three‑phase current‑measurement inputs, configurable tripping logic and fault event recording. Equipped with front‑panel status LED indicators, local HMI display for parameter setup. Panel‑mount design, non‑hot‑swappable, available as new‑surplus or refurbished spare parts. Improper threshold settings will cause unwanted nuisance tripping or failure to respond to real arc‑fault events.

Core Functions

  1. Arc‑flash fault detection: Combines optical arc‑light detection and over‑current condition to identify internal arc faults inside switchgear compartments.
  2. Ultra‑fast tripping output: Provides high‑speed relay trip signals to upstream circuit‑breakers to limit arc‑energy release and equipment damage.
  3. Flexible logic configuration: Selectable operating modes: light‑only, current‑only, light‑and‑current dual‑condition interlock trip.
  4. Fault event recording: Captures fault timestamp, current magnitude and triggered sensor channel for post‑incident analysis.
  5. Remote supervision: Modbus‑RTU communication uploads fault and alarm status to plant SCADA / DCS system.

Installation, Replacement & Critical Warnings

  1. De‑energize auxiliary supply, CT secondary circuits and trip‑circuit wiring before replacement. Unit is non‑hot‑swappable. CT secondary circuits present dangerous open‑circuit voltage hazards.
  2. Verify optical arc‑sensors are correctly routed and fixed inside each switchgear compartment; mis‑positioned sensors result in missed arc‑fault detection.
  3. Configure light sensitivity threshold and over‑current pickup setting according to switchgear design; overly‑sensitive parameters cause nuisance tripping.
  4. After installation, perform functional test: simulate arc‑light signal and over‑current condition to validate trip‑relay action.
  5. Common failure mode: Degradation of optical‑sensor fiber, surge damage to CT input circuits. Check sensor alignment and fiber integrity when loss‑of‑sensor alarms appear.
