ABB REG216 Generator Protection System

The REG216 is an early‑generation fully modular numerical generator and main‑transformer protection system from ABB. The whole system consists of rack chassis, processor unit, analog input modules, binary input/output modules and power‑supply units. It supports single or redundant configuration for processor and power supply to improve system reliability. It adopts full‑digital sampling technology, sampling rate is 12 times rated power frequency. It is equipped with rich generator‑oriented protection function library. It supports SPA bus, LON bus serial communication interfaces. This legacy product is officially discontinued by ABB, still widely running in thermal‑power and hydro‑power plant secondary protection systems.

Main Functions

Generator differential protection, stator earth‑fault protection, rotor earth‑fault protection, loss‑of‑excitation protection, reverse‑power protection, directional / non‑directional overcurrent protection, over‑voltage / under‑voltage protection, over‑frequency / under‑frequency protection.

Support configurable protection setting groups, event sequence logging and disturbance recording.

Real‑time hardware self‑diagnosis for each plug‑in module, fault alarm output.

Support dual‑processor and dual‑power redundant configuration to meet high‑reliability generator protection requirements.

Parameter configuration and commissioning are completed by dedicated REG216 engineering software.

Installation Requirement

Installed in 19‑inch standard rack inside power‑plant protection cabinet. Strictly follow CT/VT polarity for analog wiring, prohibit CT secondary open‑circuit risk. Auxiliary power supply shall be within rated DC range. After module replacement, download complete project configuration, perform protection logic verification, binary input/output point‑to‑point test and communication test with upper monitoring system. Confirm no self‑diagnosis fault alarms of each plug‑in unit.

Typical Application Scenarios

Main protection and backup protection for small‑and‑medium‑size generators and main transformers in thermal power plants, hydropower plants and industrial self‑power stations.

Key Features
  1. Full modular rack‑based generator protection system, each functional unit can be replaced individually.
  2. Support dual‑processor and dual‑power‑supply redundancy for high‑reliability generator protection occasions.
  3. Complete generator‑specialized protection function library, covers stator, rotor and abnormal operating‑condition protection.
  4. Full‑digital high‑speed sampling processing, good performance under CT saturation condition.
  5. Non‑volatile large‑capacity event and disturbance recording memory.
  6. Discontinued legacy ABB spare‑part, for maintenance and retrofitting of existing generator protection systems.
