GE IC697BEM713 Series 90‑70 Genius Bus Expansion Module

IC697BEM713 is Genius bus communication expansion module for GE Fanuc Series 90‑70 PLC platform. It provides interface between Series‑90‑70 CPU backplane and Genius distributed I/O serial bus, supports connection of Genius remote I/O blocks, Genius intelligent field devices. It can operate as local bus master or bus slave within Genius network.

Each BEM713 supports maximum 32 Genius bus devices on one Genius trunk line. Genius bus physical layer uses shielded twisted‑pair cable, transmission speed fixed at 153.6 kbaud. Module supports dual‑cable Genius bus redundancy for improved communication reliability. It exchanges I/O and process data with CPU via Series‑90‑70 backplane. Configuration performed via Proficy Machine Edition / Logicmaster 90‑70 software. Manual reference GFK‑0390. Product status: Obsolete, legacy spare‑part supply only, not compatible with RX3i backplane.

Main Functions

  1. Acts as gateway between Series‑90‑70 PLC CPU and Genius distributed I/O bus, scans remote Genius I/O stations and intelligent devices, transfers input/output data between field bus and PLC backplane memory.
  2. Supports dual‑cable Genius bus redundancy; automatically switches to secondary cable upon primary cable failure without losing I/O data.
  3. Comprehensive bus‑level diagnostics to locate cable fault, node dropout and short‑circuit issues.
  4. Front‑panel LED indicators:   ‑ Green OK: Module self‑test passed   ‑ Red FAULT: Module hardware / configuration fault   ‑ BUS A: Primary cable communication activity   ‑ BUS B: Redundant secondary cable communication activity

Installation & Wiring Requirements

  1. Cut off full rack power supply before installation or replacement. Hot‑swap is not permitted. Apply ESD protection during module handling.
  2. Insert IC697BEM713 into free slot of Series 90‑70 backplane rack and secure module latch.
  3. Genius bus wiring comply with manual GFK‑0390. Use specified Genius shielded twisted‑pair cable. Install 120 Ω termination resistors at two ends of trunk line. Observe correct A/B polarity for bus signals. Reliable protective‑ground connection is mandatory.
  4. After replacement: Power‑on rack power, check front‑panel LED status. Download hardware configuration, configure Genius node list. Verify data exchange for all remote I/O nodes; test dual‑cable switch‑over if redundant bus is deployed.
  5. Replacement note: Confirm total rack backplane power budget. Check bus termination and cable polarity. Full‑system commissioning test is mandatory before putting into service.
