GE IC697BEM731 Series 90‑70 Remote Bus Expansion Module

IC697BEM731 is remote‑rack slave bus expansion module for GE Fanuc Series 90‑70 PLC platform. It is paired with main‑rack IC697BEM721 module, installed inside each remote expansion rack, implements high‑speed parallel data communication between main CPU rack and remote I/O racks.

Each remote expansion rack must be fitted with one IC697BEM731. One BEM721 main‑rack module supports maximum 7 pieces of BEM731 remote racks in daisy‑chain topology. Maximum cable distance between BEM721 and first BEM731 is 200 meters. Parallel bus transfers backplane I/O data, ensures fast signal refresh for digital and analog modules within remote racks. Configuration is completed via Logicmaster 90‑70 or Proficy Machine Edition software. Reference manual GFK‑0366. Product status: Obsolete, legacy spare‑part supply only; not compatible with RX3i backplane, hot‑swap is not supported.

Mechanical Data

‑ Weight: approx 0.68 kg ‑ Dimension: Series 90‑70 standard single‑slot module form‑factor

Main Functions

  1. Slave communication module for Series 90‑70 remote expansion rack. Receives command and output data from main‑rack IC697BEM721, uploads remote‑rack input status back to main CPU over parallel expansion bus.
  2. IN / OUT dual 50‑pin ports support daisy‑chaining multiple remote racks, simplifies distributed I/O cabinet wiring.
  3. Detects cable break, parity error and remote‑rack power failure, sends diagnostic alarms to main CPU.
  4. Front‑panel LED indicators:   ‑ Green OK: Module self‑test passed   ‑ Red FAULT: Hardware / link / configuration fault   ‑ XMIT: Bus transmit activity   ‑ RECV: Bus receive activity

Installation & Wiring Requirements

  1. Power‑off remote rack and main rack power before installation or replacement. Hot‑swap is not permitted. Apply ESD protection during module handling.
  2. Insert IC697BEM731 into free slot of Series 90‑70 remote‑rack backplane and lock module latch. Connect 50‑pin expansion bus cable to IN port; for subsequent daisy‑chain remote racks, connect cable from OUT port to next‑rack IN port.
  3. Cable installation comply with manual GFK‑0366. Keep expansion bus cables away from high‑voltage power cables. Reliable protective‑ground connection is mandatory.
  4. After replacement: Power‑on racks, check front‑panel LED status. Download hardware configuration, confirm remote‑rack slot layout matches actual hardware. Test all digital and analog I/O signals in remote racks; simulate cable disconnection to verify fault alarm.
  5. Replacement note: Check total remote‑rack backplane power budget. Verify daisy‑chain cable sequence. Full‑system commissioning test is mandatory before putting into service.
