Description
Detailed Specifications
- Interface setup: 2 × 100BaseFX fiber Ethernet ports with MT-RJ connectors; 4 × DB9 serial ports configurable as RS232 / RS422 / RS485. Each port features 500VDC galvanic isolation to eliminate ground potential difference interference between different control cabinets.
- Supported protocols: Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU/ASCII, TriStation, SNTP time sync, Tricon peer-to-peer UDP communication, TSAA multicast and network print protocol. Serial ports can be individually set as master or slave.
- Communication performance: Fiber network runs at 100Mbps, multi-mode fiber supports maximum transmission distance of 2km. Each serial port supports baud rate up to 115.2kbps. It can handle multiple concurrent TCP connections for multi-device data access.
- Redundancy & self-test: Three fully independent processing legs run synchronously under TMR architecture. 2oo3 voting ensures stable data forwarding even one leg fails. Continuous background diagnostics monitor port status, frame error counters and link breakage, pushing fault alarms to the system log.
- Internal bus: It exchanges process variables, alarm events and configuration data with Tricon CPU over proprietary TriBus. Communication module faults will not interfere with core safety trip logic of SIS.
- Power supply: Powered by rack backplane 20–32VDC, built-in reverse polarity and overvoltage protection. Hot-swap online replacement is available for racks with redundant spare slots.
- Environmental parameters: Operating temperature -40℃ ~ +70℃; storage temperature -40℃ ~ +85℃; relative humidity 5%–95% non-condensing. Conformal coated option is available for cabinets with dust, moisture and mild corrosive vapor.
- Installation reminder: Compatible with Tricon classic system v10 and v11. Firmware revision of replacement module must match the existing system. Version mismatch causes fiber handshake failure, garbled serial data or three-leg synchronization error. Not compatible with Tricon CX racks.
Hardware Features
Rack plug-in communication board. The front panel carries LED indicators showing module PASS/FAULT, triple leg synchronization, fiber link status and serial TX/RX activity. Fiber connectors and DB9 serial ports are mounted on front panel for convenient field inspection and wiring maintenance. Rear gold finger contacts connect with rack backplane for power supply and TriBus data transmission. No field I/O terminals on the module body. Model marking is printed on metal housing, and mechanical keying prevents wrong-slot installation.
Application Scenarios
This fiber-based multi-interface communication gateway is widely used within ESD emergency shutdown, burner management, turbomachinery protection and fire & gas detection systems in petrochemical plants, refineries, gas compressor stations, thermal power plants and offshore platforms. Dual fiber Ethernet ports build redundant optical links between SIS and DCS, HMI, SCADA. Optical transmission can effectively resist heavy electromagnetic interference and ground potential difference. Serial ports connect legacy Modbus RTU instruments to realize interconnection of old and new automation devices.
Maintenance Tip: This is safety-related communication hardware. Module failure cuts off external data exchange, but core safety interlock logic keeps running normally. Daily maintenance needs to check optical power value, cable integrity and port error counters regularly.
Maintenance & Operation Guidelines
- Anti-static wristband is mandatory during module handling. Hot-swap replacement can be performed without rack power-off. Disconnect fiber and serial cables gently before pulling out the module to avoid static damage to port chips.
- Use qualified industrial multi-mode fiber and shielded twisted pair cables for serial wiring. Separate communication cables from high-power motor and inverter cables to reduce electromagnetic interference. For RS485 bus, install terminal resistors at both ends of the trunk line. Maintain the minimum bending radius of optical fiber, avoid sharp bends and extrusion.
- Insert the module fully into rack slot to guarantee stable gold finger contact. After installation, configure fiber network parameters, serial baud rate, parity and master/slave mode. Run point-to-point communication test, verify normal Modbus register read-write, and check system logs for leg mismatch and TriBus alarms.
- Keep backup copies of project configuration and firmware files. Never disassemble faulty module on site; replace the whole unit directly once permanent hardware damage occurs.
Common Troubleshooting
- Fiber Ethernet link down alarm: Inspect fiber breakage, contaminated fiber end face, excessive bending, test optical power and verify network configuration.
- Serial communication intermittent dropout: Check DB9 terminal tightness, shielding grounding, bus terminal resistor and baud rate matching.
- System raises leg mismatch warnings: Confirm firmware consistency of three legs, clean dust and oxidation on backplane gold finger contacts.
- No LED illumination on front panel: Verify backplane power supply and confirm module is fully seated in slot.
- Modbus data reading garbled: Check register mapping, byte order setting and electromagnetic noise interference on communication lines.
